Custom vs Stock Boxes: Cost, Lead Time & When Each Wins

Choosing between stock and custom boxes comes down to three things: cost, lead time, and how well the box fits what you ship. Here is how to weigh them.

Stock boxes: available now

Stock boxes ship from our Paris warehouse right away, with lower minimums and a cheaper per-unit price at low volume. They are the practical choice when you need packaging quickly or your order sizes vary.

The trade-off is fit. A standard size rarely matches your product exactly, so you pay for void fill and, on larger parcels, for the empty space itself through dimensional weight.

Custom boxes: made to fit

Custom boxes are built to your dimensions. A snug fit cuts void fill, reduces damage, and lowers dimensional-weight charges on courier shipments. You can also print branding for a better unboxing experience.

The cost is higher minimums and a production lead time, so they suit predictable, repeat volumes rather than one-off needs.

Break-even thinking

The right answer depends on volume and how much space a stock box wastes.

As a rule of thumb: if per-parcel savings on dimensional weight and void fill outweigh the higher unit cost across your annual volume, custom pays back. At low or unpredictable volumes, stock stays cheaper.

Before deciding, measure your product and read our guide on dimensional weight to see where a tighter fit saves money. Note our €50 minimum order (ex-VAT); heavy or pallet loads are quoted separately as freight after you order.
