How to Reduce Packaging Waste in E-commerce

Cutting packaging waste is one of the rare wins that helps both your margins and the planet. Less material, smaller parcels and smarter reuse mean lower carrier bills and a lighter footprint. Here is where to start.

Right-size your boxes

An oversized box needs more void fill and often costs more to ship, because carriers bill on dimensional weight as well as actual weight. Matching the carton to the product cuts material, filler and postage in one move. See Dimensional weight explained for the maths.

Choose mono-material and recyclable

Packaging made from a single material is far easier for customers to recycle than mixed laminates or plastic-and-paper combinations. Favour recyclable corrugated board and clearly labelled plastics. Our Recyclable packaging buyer's guide covers what to look for.

Swap plastic void fill for paper

Paper cushioning protects just as well for most goods and drops into the same recycling stream as the box.

Reuse inbound packaging

Boxes and filler that arrive with your own stock can be reused for outbound orders or broken down for cushioning. It costs nothing and diverts material from the bin.

Avoid double-boxing

Shipping a product in its retail box inside a second carton doubles the material for little gain. Where the primary pack is sturdy enough, ship it as-is with a label, or choose one right-sized outer.

Measure and iterate

Track your box sizes, fill weight and damage rate. Small, regular adjustments compound: right-sizing a top-selling line saves on every order.
